What is brand positioning?
Arguably the most important idea in branding — and the one most often gotten wrong.
Brand positioning is the specific place your brand occupies in a customer’s mind relative to alternatives — the answer to ‘why you, not them?’ It’s a strategic choice about what you want to stand for, and, crucially, what you’re willing to give up to own it.
Positioning is sacrifice
The hardest part of positioning is what you say no to. A position that tries to be everything to everyone occupies no space at all. Strong positioning means deliberately not appealing to some people so you can mean something specific to others.
It lives in their head, not yours
Positioning isn’t your slogan or your intention — it’s the actual place you occupy in the customer’s mind. You influence it, but you don’t control it. The test is what they say about you when you’re not in the room.
Why it’s the foundation
Every other marketing decision flows from positioning: your messaging, your channels, your pricing, your tone. Get it wrong and everything downstream is slightly off. Get it right and the rest gets easier.

How is positioning different from a tagline?
A tagline expresses positioning, but isn’t it. Positioning is the strategic place you occupy; the tagline is one way to signal it.
Can you reposition an established brand?
Yes, but it’s hard and slow — you’re changing beliefs people already hold. The Motilal Oswal repositioning is an example of doing it at scale.
How do I find my positioning?
Start from the intersection of what you’re genuinely good at, what customers value, and what competitors aren’t owning. See the brand strategy guide.
