Marketing leadership: beyond the marketing.

What leading a marketing function actually demands — most of which isn’t about marketing at all.

The short answer

Marketing leadership is less about being the best marketer in the room and more about building a team, setting direction, and connecting marketing to the business. The hardest parts are the leadership parts: hiring and growing people, earning trust across the organisation, and making the strategic calls under pressure. The marketing craft is the entry ticket, not the job.

The job is mostly not marketing

As you rise, the work shifts from doing marketing to enabling it — building the team, setting the strategy, securing the budget, aligning the organisation. Many great marketers struggle here because it’s a different skill set: leadership, not craft.

Build the team and the function

The most lasting thing a marketing leader does is build capability — hiring well, growing people, creating a function that outlasts any single campaign. Building a 35-person team from zero taught that the team you build matters more than any campaign you run.

Connect marketing to the business

Marketing leadership means translating between marketing and the business — making the case to the board, tying the work to outcomes, earning credibility beyond the marketing department. The leaders who succeed are fluent in business, not just marketing.
