Template · Brand Style Guide
A style guide that’s only colours and fonts governs nothing.
The sections a brand style guide actually needs to keep a brand consistent at scale — including the strategic decisions most guides leave out.
Most style guides document the surface — logo, palette, typography — and skip the substance: the positioning, voice principles and decision rules that keep a brand coherent when a hundred people are making it. This structure documents both, so the guide governs rather than merely decorates.
A brand is kept consistent by decisions written down, not by a colour palette.
1 · The strategic foundation
Positioning, posture, and what the brand stands for and against — the decisions everything visual should express. Most guides skip straight past this, which is why they don’t hold.
2 · Voice & principles
How the brand sounds, with real before/after examples, not adjectives. ‘We say this, not that’ is far more useful than ‘friendly and confident.’
3 · Visual system
Logo, colour, type, imagery, layout — with the reasoning, and the rules for the edge cases people actually hit. A system, not a swatch page.
4 · Decision rules
The ‘what do I do when…’ guidance for situations the guide didn’t foresee. This is what makes a guide usable at scale instead of a document people ignore.
5 · Governance
Who owns the brand, who decides on exceptions, and how the guide gets updated. A guide nobody owns quietly stops being true.
Write the strategic foundation before the visual system, and include real examples for every rule. A style guide without ‘this not that’ examples gets interpreted into incoherence.
Common questions
What should a brand style guide include?
The strategic foundation (positioning and posture), voice principles with real examples, the visual system with reasoning, decision rules for edge cases, and governance for who keeps it current.
Why do most brand guidelines fail?
They document colours and fonts but skip the positioning, voice rules and decision guidance — so they decorate the brand without governing how a hundred people actually make it.
