Personal branding · The argument

Publish the argument, not the highlight.

A feed of wins tells me you were there. A published argument tells me how you’d think about my problem — which is the only thing I’m actually assessing.

The claim

Most personal branding is a highlight reel: the award, the stage, the launch, the humble-brag with a lesson stapled on. It performs authority without demonstrating it, and everyone can tell.

Reasoning is unfakeable. If you show how you got to a conclusion — including the part where you nearly got it wrong — a reader can evaluate your judgement rather than your luck. That’s what they were trying to assess all along.

A win tells me you were in the room. An argument tells me how you’d think about mine.

The evidence

The whole reason this section of my site is built the way it is: every position here ends with the strongest case against it. That’s not modesty, it’s the most efficient credibility mechanism I know — because anyone can assert, and almost nobody will argue against themselves in public.

It also matches what I’ve seen professionally. In a category where fame is restricted, credibility outperformed celebrity by a distance — a market veteran with genuine scars drew millions of views that a rented famous face would never have earned.

The case against me
Where this breaks

The fair objection: reach is a real prerequisite, and reasoning is slow. The highlight reel works — that’s why it’s everywhere. Someone posting wins daily will out-distribute my careful argument every week of the year, and distribution is not nothing.

So the honest position is sequencing, not superiority: highlights buy attention, arguments convert it into trust. If you only do the first, you’re known and replaceable. If you only do the second, you’re trusted by seventeen people. I’d still rather be the second, but I’m not pretending it’s free.

If you do one thing

  • Publish how you reached the conclusion, not just the conclusion.
  • Argue against yourself in public — almost nobody else will.
  • Expertise earns attention that advertising has to rent.
  • Highlights buy reach; reasoning converts it. You need both, in that order.
