Media · The argument

Attention is a rental market. The rent goes up every year.

You can keep bidding for slots in someone else’s room. Or you can own the room people are already standing in.

The claim

Every year, attention costs more and delivers less. That isn’t a media-buying problem you can optimise your way out of — it’s the structure of the market. You are renting seconds inside environments other people own, competing with everyone else renting the same seconds, against an audience whose entire reflex is to skip.

Rented attention has to be re-bought every morning. Owned presence compounds while you sleep.

You are renting seconds inside rooms other people own. Then wondering why the rent went up.

The evidence

Rather than buy panels inside a metro station, we took over Malad West entirely — so the brand stopped being an ad in the space and became part of the space. Same audience, different relationship, and one of the most distinctive transit properties in the category.

The same logic works on voices, not just places. In a category where celebrity endorsement is restricted, a real market veteran — not an actor — drew 2.6 million views in fifteen days. We didn’t rent his fame. We borrowed his credibility, which behaves completely differently.

Where this breaks

The counter-case is real and I’ll make it properly: owning is illiquid. A takeover is a fixed bet with a long lead time and no dial to turn down on a bad month. Rented media is instantly measurable, instantly killable, and for a startup finding product-market fit, that optionality is worth more than presence.

Own environments when you know who you are and where your people already stand. Rent while you’re still finding out. The mistake isn’t renting — it’s renting forever because owning requires a decision.

If you do one thing

  • Audit what fraction of your media budget buys something you keep.
  • Look for the environment your audience is already in, not the slot next to it.
  • Credibility travels further than fame — and it’s cheaper.
  • Rent while you’re learning. Own once you know.
